Chapter 5 · Research & Explanatory Writing
- Unit 5.2 · Source Credibility, Relevance & Corroboration
- Unit 5.3 · Research Notes, Quotation & Paraphrase
- Unit 5.4 · Informative & Explanatory Writing
Assigned readings
- Planning an After-School Room: Four Sources
- A Good Question Leaves Room for an Answer
- How a Repair Log Helps a Team Learn
- Treasure Island
This is the parent timetable. Student navigation follows chapters and units. A week can finish one chapter and begin the next; follow the named lessons in order and retain drafts and reading notes.
This week’s goals
- Complete the five named sessions, using each unit’s linked reading.
- Explain evidence or sentence structure before consulting guidance.
- Save a substantive revision and a next-step note.
For the class sessions, read the named selections linked in the individual unit lessons: Planning an After-School Room: Four Sources, A Good Question Leaves Room for an Answer, How a Repair Log Helps a Team Learn. During separate daily reading time, read Treasure Island Chapters 23–24 in order. Keep two event notes, one short referenced detail, and a question for each chapter pair.
Five class sessions of about 40–45 minutes, plus 15–20 minutes of independent reading most days; the complete novel is assigned during that separate reading time. Adjust and extend for comprehension. The midterm uses two 45-minute sessions and the final three 40-minute sessions within their stated totals.
Session 1 · Source Credibility, Relevance & Corroboration · Practice and revise
Retrieve the distinction rather than memorize model wording. Discuss one missed question, then answer the exit ticket independently.
Your task
For Source Credibility, Relevance & Corroboration, attempt practice questions 1–6 without models, then answer: Can a source be credible but irrelevant to the task? Save a correction explaining one change.
- Prepare (5 minutes): recall the relevant distinction and state the task.
- Read or examine (10 minutes): use the named passage, source label, or sentence.
- Apply (20–25 minutes): complete the task independently and record references.
- Reflect (5 minutes): compare with criteria, revise one choice, and save the work.
Hint and response guidance
Begin with an accurate short detail. Explain its job before extending the claim.
Yes. An accurate account of a different setting may not support a claim about this trial. Explain the connection rather than assuming that authority alone makes it useful.
- Accurately complete the assigned task using the supplied reading or sentence.
- Explain a relevant detail or grammatical/craft relationship.
- Preserve a significant qualification and use a traceable reference when needed.
Session 2 · Research Notes, Quotation & Paraphrase · Read and distinguish
A source note keeps exact quotation, paraphrase, and your own commentary visibly separate. Record the source label and location immediately. Waiting until the final draft encourages lost attribution and confusion about which wording is yours. To paraphrase, understand the passage, cover it, restate its meaning, and compare for accuracy. Preserve quantities, groups, and qualifications. Twelve of eighteen respondents means two thirds of respondents, not two thirds of all residents.
Your task
For Research Notes, Quotation & Paraphrase, read the assigned selection and study Parts 1–2. Write two located notes and answer both checkpoints before opening their guidance.

A restatement in new wording and structure that preserves a source’s meaning and limits. A source note keeps exact quotation, paraphrase, and your own commentary visibly separate. Record the source label and location immediately. Waiting until the final draft encourages lost attribution and confusion about which wording is yours. According to Source A, two-thirds of the eighteen questionnaire respondents chose quieter drawing rather than shared projects from the offered options. The draft changes respondents into all residents, preference into a demand, and quieter drawing into guaranteed silence. An accurate paraphrase retains those category limits and identifies the source.
- Accurately complete the assigned task using the supplied reading or sentence.
- Explain a relevant detail or grammatical/craft relationship.
- Preserve a significant qualification and use a traceable reference when needed.
Session 3 · Research Notes, Quotation & Paraphrase · Develop and apply
Patchwriting replaces a few words while retaining the source’s sentence structure or distinctive wording. It is not a complete paraphrase. Put exact borrowed language in quotation marks, or rewrite the idea with a genuinely different structure and cite it. Add commentary that does a different job from the source note. Explain how the information bears on your question and what it cannot establish. Check attribution in the draft and final source list. Honest note keeping makes later revision easier.
Your task
For Research Notes, Quotation & Paraphrase, study Parts 3–4, then write an accurate attributed paraphrase and identify the draft’s distortions.

Session 4 · Research Notes, Quotation & Paraphrase · Practice and revise
Retrieve the distinction rather than memorize model wording. Discuss one missed question, then answer the exit ticket independently.
Your task
For Research Notes, Quotation & Paraphrase, attempt practice questions 1–6 without models, then answer: Does paraphrasing remove the need for a citation? Save a correction explaining one change.
- Prepare (5 minutes): recall the relevant distinction and state the task.
- Read or examine (10 minutes): use the named passage, source label, or sentence.
- Apply (20–25 minutes): complete the task independently and record references.
- Reflect (5 minutes): compare with criteria, revise one choice, and save the work.
Hint and response guidance

No. The information or idea still comes from the source. Attribute it even when you use your own wording.
- Accurately complete the assigned task using the supplied reading or sentence.
- Explain a relevant detail or grammatical/craft relationship.
- Preserve a significant qualification and use a traceable reference when needed.
Session 5 · Informative & Explanatory Writing · Read and distinguish
An explanatory response helps a reader understand a process, distinction, or relationship. State a controlling idea without making a recommendation unless the assignment requests one. Explain the topic accurately before trying to make the prose sound sophisticated. Organize according to the relationship. A explanation of missing data may define categories, give examples, and explain consequences. A procedure needs an accurate order. Choose sections because they help the reader, not merely to reach a fixed paragraph count.

Writing that clarifies how, why, or in what relationship something can be understood. An explanatory response helps a reader understand a process, distinction, or relationship. State a controlling idea without making a recommendation unless the assignment requests one. Explain the topic accurately before trying to make the prose sound sophisticated. A recorded zero reports that the observed count was zero under a stated method. A scheduled closure explains why no ordinary session occurred. A missing entry means the record does not supply the count, so its value remains unknown. In Source B, Wednesday is closed and Friday is missing; the three observed days cannot be enlarged into a complete weekly total.
- Accurately complete the assigned task using the supplied reading or sentence.
- Explain a relevant detail or grammatical/craft relationship.
- Preserve a significant qualification and use a traceable reference when needed.

Parent / teacher weekly conference
Discuss one accurate inference, one source or language distinction, and one revision. Keep oral feedback about meaning separate from accent or family background. Check the actual chapter reading log rather than assuming a completed screen proves comprehension.
- Can the learner give the literal situation before an interpretation?
- Can the learner locate a detail and explain why it matters?
- Does a source claim preserve its group, method, and limit?
- Which specific misunderstanding needs reteaching before the next week?
