Chapter 8 · Discussion, Listening & Presentation

Assigned readings

Follow the chapter/unit sequence here; the student-facing lesson names do not depend on a calendar week. Keep drafts, reading notes and corrections in a portfolio.

This week’s goals

Read Anne of Green Gables, Chapters 37–38. Keep a literal summary, a short quotation, a choice or idea and one question for each assigned chapter. Read the assigned complete short selections. For books, follow the chapter groups above, keep early interpretations tentative and return to whole-book conclusions after finishing. For an exam week, the unseen paper supplies its own sources.

Five sessions of 45–60 minutes. English courses add 20–30 minutes of sustained book reading on most days. Exam papers retain their full stated time; combine blocks where specified, then use the remaining time for marking and correction.

Session 1 · Read, apply and revisit — Evidence-Based Discussion & Listening

Teach this unit across two core sessions: Parts 1–2 with the first worked case, then Parts 3–4 with the changed case and independent application. Allow 45–60 minutes per session, followed by separate reading/writing or source-study sessions in the parent plan. Pause at each question; do not assign this entire page as one short lecture.

Your task

Consolidation 5 for Discussion, Listening & Presentation: Write two specific feedback comments on a response to this unit: one on accuracy or meaning and one on evidence or language. Then state a revision priority. Record the source or sentence, explain the reasoning, then compare with an earlier portfolio response on Evidence-Based Discussion & Listening and name a specific improvement.

  1. Retrieve the relevant definition and restate the question.
  2. Read the supplied selection or case; mark the exact evidence or structure.
  3. Complete the task independently before opening the response guidance.
  4. Explain the relationship, compare the model and record a specific revision or unresolved question.
Hint and response guidance

Begin with the actual source detail or sentence; keep the claim within what it establishes.

Check whether the response explains prepare a discussion with a question, a tentative interpretation, and two text references. listening matters as much as speaking. Ask for a relevant detail and the reason it supports the conclusion. Prioritize the mistaken assumption shown here: “I win the discussion if I speak the most.”

  • Answer the specific question accurately.
  • Use a relevant detail and explain why it matters.
  • Apply the unit’s defined terms or method correctly.
  • Recognize a meaningful limitation or alternative.

Session 2 · Read, apply and revisit — Speaking, Presenting & Responding

Teach this unit across two core sessions: Parts 1–2 with the first worked case, then Parts 3–4 with the changed case and independent application. Allow 45–60 minutes per session, followed by separate reading/writing or source-study sessions in the parent plan. Pause at each question; do not assign this entire page as one short lecture.

Your task

Consolidation 6 for Discussion, Listening & Presentation: Choose a fresh sentence or detail from the assigned selection. Explain how this unit’s method applies, and identify one uncertainty or limitation. Record the source or sentence, explain the reasoning, then compare with an earlier portfolio response on Speaking, Presenting & Responding and name a specific improvement.

The sources agree that access matters but differ on how to estimate demand and fund supervision. The survey suggests interest among respondents; the restricted materials grant cannot pay wages. A funded attendance trial addresses the uncertainty. The response must supply its own precise detail and explain it; copying the model without fresh evidence is insufficient.

  • Answer the specific question accurately.
  • Use a relevant detail and explain why it matters.
  • Apply the unit’s defined terms or method correctly.
  • Recognize a meaningful limitation or alternative.

Session 3 · Read, apply and revisit — Evidence-Based Discussion & Listening

Teach this unit across two core sessions: Parts 1–2 with the first worked case, then Parts 3–4 with the changed case and independent application. Allow 45–60 minutes per session, followed by separate reading/writing or source-study sessions in the parent plan. Pause at each question; do not assign this entire page as one short lecture.

Your task

Consolidation 7 for Discussion, Listening & Presentation: Record what the source explicitly states before interpreting it.

Partner speaks for several minutes. You disagree but have not heard their evidence. These are the supplied words; conclusions about motives or causes need additional reasoning.

  • Answer the specific question accurately.
  • Use a relevant detail and explain why it matters.
  • Apply the unit’s defined terms or method correctly.
  • Recognize a meaningful limitation or alternative.

Session 4 · Read, apply and revisit — Speaking, Presenting & Responding

Teach this unit across two core sessions: Parts 1–2 with the first worked case, then Parts 3–4 with the changed case and independent application. Allow 45–60 minutes per session, followed by separate reading/writing or source-study sessions in the parent plan. Pause at each question; do not assign this entire page as one short lecture.

Your task

Consolidation 8 for Discussion, Listening & Presentation: Give a plausible alternative response and explain which source detail would help choose between responses. Record the source or sentence, explain the reasoning, then compare with an earlier portfolio response on Speaking, Presenting & Responding and name a specific improvement.

Label it “18 of 20 surveyed club members supported the plan.” Explain that the club is not the whole school. The revision makes the evidence traceable and preserves its limit. A different conclusion needs a source detail it explains at least as well; identify what would confirm or challenge it.

  • Answer the specific question accurately.
  • Use a relevant detail and explain why it matters.
  • Apply the unit’s defined terms or method correctly.
  • Recognize a meaningful limitation or alternative.

Session 5 · Read, apply and revisit — Evidence-Based Discussion & Listening

Allow 45–60 minutes per session, followed by separate reading/writing or source-study sessions in the parent plan. Pause at each question; do not assign this entire page as one short lecture.

Your task

Consolidation 9 for Discussion, Listening & Presentation: Explain one choice in the model answer that makes it more accurate than the mistaken answer.

Evaluate preparation, accurate listening, evidence, questions, and willingness to revise. Participation is not measured by monopolizing time. The improved answer matches the source’s scope and meaning.

  • Answer the specific question accurately.
  • Use a relevant detail and explain why it matters.
  • Apply the unit’s defined terms or method correctly.
  • Recognize a meaningful limitation or alternative.
