Chapter 6 · Narrative, Memoir & Revision
Assigned readings
This week connects focused skill instruction with a sustained reading or writing assignment. Keep evidence notes, drafts, feedback, and corrections in the portfolio.
This week’s goals
- Protagonist comparison: complete the text-based task and explain a relevant detail.
- Editing pass: use the linked unit method independently.
- Review and quiz: review criteria and record a next goal.
Read Books XV–XVI. Finish the narrative or memoir and Chapter 6 assessments.
Five sessions of about 40–50 minutes, plus 20–30 minutes of sustained reading most days. Spread long passages across reading time; shorten or extend the schedule according to comprehension. Exam sessions may be combined as specified in the paper.
Session 1 · Protagonist comparison
A practical method: read once for literal understanding, mark a relevant detail, write a tentative response, then test it against another detail. In a language task, identify the intended meaning before changing the sentence. In a research task, record what each source actually establishes before synthesizing. For Grade 9, the application expectation is: Trace a change across a passage and consider one competing explanation. Plan a response of about 180–250 words when a task calls for a developed paragraph; a sentence-editing task may need much less. These lengths guide planning rather than replace the success criteria.
Your task
Compare Telemachus’s position here with Books I–II. Cite two changes and one remaining limit.
- Prepare (5 minutes): retrieve the relevant method and state one question.
- Study (10–15 minutes): read or reread the named passage and annotate relevant details.
- Apply (15–20 minutes): complete the task independently, using accurate source references.
- Reflect (5 minutes): explain a choice, check the criteria, and record a next step.
Hint and response guidance
Begin with a short, precisely located detail or sentence. Explain its relevance before extending the conclusion.
Participation in reunion and planning shows growth, but knowledge still depends on reports and revelation. Development is not perfect independence.
- Accurately complete the assigned task.
- Use relevant evidence or a purposeful language/craft choice.
- Explain the reasoning or effect and preserve an important qualification.
Session 2 · Narrative ending
Read the named section before making an inference. State the task in your own words and locate the evidence it requires.
Your task
Revise your ending so it grows from the scene’s change and preserves a relevant complication.
An ending can show an altered action or understanding without declaring a universal lesson. It should not introduce a new unsupported solution.
- Accurately complete the assigned task.
- Use relevant evidence or a purposeful language/craft choice.
- Explain the reasoning or effect and preserve an important qualification.
Session 3 · Editing pass
Explain how a detail supports the claim; separate what the text states from your interpretation and what remains uncertain.
Your task
Check boundaries, agreement, reference, punctuation, and quotation or dialogue presentation.
Identify a rule or meaning issue before correcting it. Editing follows structural revision, since whole scenes may still change.
- Accurately complete the assigned task.
- Use relevant evidence or a purposeful language/craft choice.
- Explain the reasoning or effect and preserve an important qualification.
Session 4 · Portfolio submission
Draft for purpose and audience first. Use the linked unit to review the method, then apply it to this week’s text rather than copying a model.
Your task
Submit the complete narrative, revised scene, feedback record, and reflection.
Explain two substantial changes and one next goal. A revision record is evidence of process, not an excuse to omit the final draft.
- Accurately complete the assigned task.
- Use relevant evidence or a purposeful language/craft choice.
- Explain the reasoning or effect and preserve an important qualification.
Session 5 · Review and quiz
Use feedback to test meaning, evidence, and scope. Revise substantive issues before editing conventions; preserve the earlier version.
Your task
Complete Chapter 6 review and quiz. Apply one correction to a fresh sentence or scene.
Transfer means explaining a new application. Copying the corrected model without reasoning does not demonstrate it.
- Accurately complete the assigned task.
- Use relevant evidence or a purposeful language/craft choice.
- Explain the reasoning or effect and preserve an important qualification.
Submit this week
- Revise your ending so it grows from the scene’s change and preserves a relevant complication.
- Submit the complete narrative, revised scene, feedback record, and reflection.
- Complete Chapter 6 review and quiz. Apply one correction to a fresh sentence or scene.
Parent / teacher weekly conference
Use the five workshop dimensions and a conference about craft. A personally moving topic is not automatically well-developed writing.
- Can the learner summarize the reading before interpreting it?
- Can the learner point to the evidence or explain the language choice?
- Does the response preserve source scope and a relevant uncertainty?
- What should be re-taught before the next week?
