Chapter 11 background connecting observations, mechanisms, calculations and limits.

Begin a conservation or design project with a precise problem, beneficiaries, measurable criteria, constraints and a baseline. An action completed is an output; the ecological or service outcome still needs evidence. A corridor exists physically before its effects on movement or persistence are known. A lower meter reading can reflect weather or use changes as well as the proposed intervention.
Decisions combine evidence with priorities. Expected loss, weighted scores and life-cycle totals can help, but they omit information unless their definitions, uncertainty and distribution are visible. A rare severe outcome may matter differently from frequent small losses, and two groups can reasonably weight access or affordability differently. Report those choices rather than presenting them as physical laws.
The capstone should compare alternatives, show reproducible calculations and test one important uncertain assumption. A manageable pilot connects prediction with measured outcome; a proposal-only route uses supplied data and identifies that limit honestly. Retain the first model, unexpected observations and a substantive revision. The goal is reasoning that another learner can follow and improve, supported by the complete exam and portfolio review.
