Life Science & Scientific Inquiry — Student & parent guide

A full-year Grade 7 life-science course with scientific inquiry, cells, interacting body systems, reproduction, heredity, ecology, and evolution. Chapters contain focused units rather than week labels. Supplied explanations, models, evidence records, worked answers, and parent guidance support study without an outside textbook purchase.

A suggested lesson routine

  1. Recall one connected idea and name a question.
  2. Read one short teaching part, sketch a relationship, and attempt its reasoning check.
  3. Work through the example before comparing with its model.
  4. Complete remaining practice and explain a calculation or mechanism in your own words.
  5. Revise one error and answer the exit check.

36 weeks × five flexible 40–45-minute sessions = 180 sessions: 120 unit sessions (40 × three), 24 investigation sessions (eight × three), 16 chapter review/quiz sessions (eight × two), eight midterm/final preparation, response, and feedback sessions, and 12 flexible rehearsal, retrieval, reading support, reteaching, or catch-up sessions. Each half has 90 sessions. Times are planning estimates, not measured completion claims.

Keep a life-science notebook

Record questions, vocabulary, labeled diagrams, assumptions, raw measurements or clearly labeled supplied data, calculations, claim-evidence-reasoning explanations, and revisions. Distinguish observations from inferences and collected evidence from illustrative course records.

Use assessments well

Each unit has eight practice questions and four retrieval tasks. Some objective practice answers can be checked automatically; explanations require a parent or teacher to evaluate accuracy, evidence, mechanisms, units, and limitations. Chapter review and quiz each cover every unit. Midterm, cumulative final, and optional sample have printable papers and worked keys. The sample is scheduled before the final.

Adjust the support

Read in shorter blocks, say an explanation aloud, draw before writing, and use supplied vocabulary. An annotated diagram with an oral explanation can demonstrate the same reasoning as a paragraph. Use flexible time instead of forcing all work into one meeting. Linked sources are optional extensions; all core cases and assessments include their needed records.

Reference tools

Readiness diagnostic

Use these six tasks to identify skills needing review. Required conversions are supplied. This is a starting check, not an entry requirement or a test of science not yet taught.

Question 1

Convert 2 cm to millimeters using 1 cm=10 mm.

Worked solution and marking guidance

Multiply 2 by 10.

20 mm.

  • Use the supplied information accurately.
  • Show or explain the method.
  • Give correct units or the relevant distinction.

Question 2

Find the mean of 4, 6, and 8 seconds.

Worked solution and marking guidance

Add 4+6+8=18; divide by three.

6 s.

  • Use the supplied information accurately.
  • Show or explain the method.
  • Give correct units or the relevant distinction.

Question 3

Six of twenty objects have a marked feature. Find the percentage.

Worked solution and marking guidance

6/20×100=30.

30%.

  • Use the supplied information accurately.
  • Show or explain the method.
  • Give correct units or the relevant distinction.

Question 4

A height changes from 3 cm to 7 cm. Find the change.

Worked solution and marking guidance

Use final minus initial: 7−3.

+4 cm.

  • Use the supplied information accurately.
  • Show or explain the method.
  • Give correct units or the relevant distinction.

Question 5

A record says a leaf is yellow and then claims it lacks a nutrient. Which is observed and which is inferred?

Worked solution and marking guidance

Appearance is recorded; its cause is proposed.

Yellow appearance is the observation; a particular nutrient cause is an inference requiring further evidence.

  • Use the supplied information accurately.
  • Show or explain the method.
  • Give correct units or the relevant distinction.

Question 6

To test whether light affects seedling height, identify the changed factor, measured outcome, and one comparable condition.

Worked solution and marking guidance

Change light; measure a defined height change; keep species or water comparable.

Light is the changed factor, height change the outcome, and species or water is a relevant comparable condition.

  • Use the supplied information accurately.
  • Show or explain the method.
  • Give correct units or the relevant distinction.

Investigations and honest records

Every chapter has a three-session investigation with method, variables or model assumptions, illustrative records, analysis questions, a worked explanation, and criteria. Supplied records let students complete the core reasoning without a microscope, outdoor trip, living cultures, or special laboratory equipment. If they perform a suitable optional activity, keep actual measurements separately and discuss why they can differ from the illustrative data.

A provided-data investigation demonstrates analysis and modeling, not personally collecting observations. For optional hands-on work follow the activity’s specific safety notes and appropriate adult oversight. Do not grow unknown microorganisms, sample bodily fluids, deliberately expose organisms to infection or predation, taste experimental materials, or treat model water clarity as evidence of drinking safety.

Portfolio and two projects

Keep eight revised investigation explanations with data or models and corrections. The habitat-design unit develops a diagram and 200–300-word recommendation or equivalent oral explanation comparing feasible options, a criterion, calculations, maintenance uncertainty, and a next test. The life-science capstone develops an annotated model and 300–500-word explanation or equivalent presentation using at least three supplied units or investigation records, a mechanism, evidence, and a serious alternative or limitation. Unit and flexible sessions allow planning and revision.

Accept scientifically accurate explanations that differ from the worked model. Assess biological accuracy, evidence connections, calculation steps, and useful limitations. Students need not share family traits, health records, personal beliefs, or private experiences. Classroom examples use fictional organisms and supplied observations.

Use exam keys and feedback

The midterm covers Chapters 1–4 and the cumulative final all eight. The optional sample is a shorter rehearsal before the final. The papers reuse course ideas and teaching cases, include accessible keys, and are study assessments rather than secure official tests. A parent marks each written task against its three criteria and discusses partial understanding.

Keep the first attempt before revision. An automatic practice score checks only the stated objective answer; it does not establish that the biological reasoning is understood. A model response is guidance, not a required script. A recorded score does not determine homeschool credit or district certification.

Weekly parent assignments: 36 weeks

Five flexible sessions per week. Three sessions per unit separate short teaching blocks, worked modeling, and independent practice. Complete embedded checks as part of the practice set rather than treating them as extra duplicate homework. Investigation, review, assessment, feedback, and flexible time are scheduled separately. Extend timing or accept an equivalent oral/diagram response when needed.
