Text Structure & Connections — Drills · Grade 8 English

Chapter: Informational Reading & Media

What these drills covers

By the end of Text Structure & Connections you should be able to:

2 questions, written answer, each with a worked explanation.

Vocabulary used: text structure, cause and effect, compare and contrast.

Problem 1

State the method in your own words, then apply it to one fresh detail.
Answer and explanation

Nonfiction organization may use sequence, comparison, cause and effect, or problem and solution, sometimes combining them. Signal words are clues, not a substitute for reading. Show an actual application before considering the method recalled.

Use the criteria to compare your reasoning, not to copy the model’s wording. A supported alternative interpretation may earn full credit.

Response criteria

  • Make an accurate, focused claim or revision.
  • Use a relevant detail or a clearly explained language choice.
  • Explain the relationship and recognize a relevant limit.

Problem 2

Correct this mistake in one or two sentences: “Because the article says ‘then,’ it proves cause and effect.”
Answer and explanation

“Then” may indicate sequence. Explain the mechanism or evidence connecting events before calling one a cause of the other.
