By the end of Theme & Symbolism you should be able to:
- I can determine a theme in a text and explain how details develop it.
- I can identify a symbol and explain the larger idea it represents.
2 questions, written answer, each with a worked explanation.
Vocabulary used: theme, symbol, motif.
Problem 1
Answer and explanation
A topic names a subject, such as trust. A theme is a supported interpretation of what a text suggests about that subject. It may be stated or implied, and need not be a moral rule. Show an actual application before considering the method recalled.
Use the criteria to compare your reasoning, not to copy the model’s wording. A supported alternative interpretation may earn full credit.
Response criteria
- Make an accurate, focused claim or revision.
- Use a relevant detail or a clearly explained language choice.
- Explain the relationship and recognize a relevant limit.
