Comparing Text to Film & Adaptation — Drills · Grade 8 English
Chapter: Poetry, Drama & Longer ReadingWhat these drills covers
By the end of Comparing Text to Film & Adaptation you should be able to:
- I can identify specific differences between a written text and its film or stage adaptation.
- I can evaluate why a director might have made a particular change and what effect it has on meaning.
2 questions, written answer, each with a worked explanation.
Vocabulary used: adaptation, fidelity (to a text), director's choice.
Problem 1
Answer and explanation
Compare the same event in two media before judging fidelity. A film uses camera position, editing, performance, sound, and silence where prose may use narration. Show an actual application before considering the method recalled.
Use the criteria to compare your reasoning, not to copy the model’s wording. A supported alternative interpretation may earn full credit.
Response criteria
- Make an accurate, focused claim or revision.
- Use a relevant detail or a clearly explained language choice.
- Explain the relationship and recognize a relevant limit.
Problem 2
