The Coordinate Plane — Practice
Two numbers pin down any point, once you agree which one comes first.
What these questions cover
These questions use 5 ideas from the course. Follow any of them for a definition, where it is taught, and what it leads to.
- Mean — Two kinds of centre: the balance point, and the middle value.
- Origin — The point (0, 0), which every proportional graph passes through.
- Perimeter — Distance all the way around the outside.
- Area — Space inside, measured in square units.
- Quadrant — One of the four regions the axes divide the plane into.

Problem 8
How far is it from (2, -3) to (2, 5)?
Worked answer
8
5 - (-3) = 8
Problem 9
How far is it from (-4, 1) to (6, 1)?
Worked answer
10
6 - (-4) = 10
Problem 10
Where does the point (0, -4) lie?
- On the y-axis
- In quadrant IV
- In quadrant III
- On the x-axis
Worked answer
On the y-axis
No across-distance, so it sits on the vertical axis

2(6)+2(4) = 20
Problem 16
The same rectangle: find its area.
Worked answer
24
6 × 4 = 24
