Economic Systems: Markets, Ownership & Socialism — Drills · Grade 10 Social Studies

Chapter: Nations, Industry & Economic Life

What these drills covers

By the end of Economic Systems: Markets, Ownership & Socialism you should be able to:

4 questions, written answer, each with a worked explanation.

Vocabulary used: context, evidence, interpretation, external cost, cooperative.

Problem 1

Why can a market price omit some social costs?
Answer and explanation

A price records an exchange under institutions, not a natural judgment about a person’s worth or a complete social cost. Explain who can participate, what information they have, and which costs fall outside the transaction.

Problem 2

Why does one publicly owned railway not describe an entire economy?
Answer and explanation

Do not infer an entire system from one public service or one private shop. Identify the institution, sector, period, and decision rule. Mixed arrangements require concrete description rather than using capitalism or socialism as slogans for every policy.

Problem 3

Why is a Marxist text not proof that all workers shared its program?
Answer and explanation

Separate a theorist’s claims from independent evidence and later adaptations. Workers could disagree over reform, revolution, religion, and organization. Later governments using Marxist language need analysis of their actual institutions and practices.

Problem 4

How can a comparison avoid turning an economic label into a verdict?
Answer and explanation

State the question before judging a system. Identify what evidence supports a result and which other causes matter. Neither a success story nor a failure in one sector establishes that every arrangement under a broad label has the same outcome.
