The Light That Stays
15. Inner Joy, and the Days That Are Hard
I’ll end where I began.
There is a light inside you — awake, warm, and quietly glad — and it does not go out. You already own it. Meditation is just walking back toward it, over and over, until you know the way even in the dark.
Some days will be hard. That’s not a sign you’re doing life wrong — it’s just life. But here’s what changes when you practice: the hard days stop being able to reach all the way down. You’ve got somewhere to stand. You find yourself noticing small joys you used to miss. You’re kinder, because you’ve felt that the same light is in everyone. And you’re tougher in a gentle way, because you know that storms pass and the sky stays.
If a hard day ever turns into a hard week, or a sadness sits on your chest and won’t get up, please remember the lesson from the lost boy in Chapter 2: tell a grown-up you trust. Asking for help is not weakness. It is one of the strongest, wisest things a person can do — for kids and grown-ups alike.
And every day, big day or small, you can stop for one minute. Take one slow breath. Drop your shoulders. Become the eagle for a second and see your day from up there. If you’ve caught yourself in a loop, step out for a moment. Or just sit, and feel your breath move in and out, your shoulders soften, your feet on the floor.
That little yes in your chest, when you find it — that’s the light that stays.
Questions to talk about
No answer key. These are for arguing over, with someone who read the same chapter.
- 'The hard days stop being able to reach all the way down. You've got somewhere to stand.' What does having somewhere to stand mean, in practical terms, on an ordinary bad day?
- The book ends where it began, with the same sentence about the light. Why end by repeating yourself? What has changed in the reader between the two?
- He repeats, one last time, that telling a trusted grown-up is one of the strongest and wisest things a person can do. Why say it three times across one short book?
